[Review] Movie:Neerja

Neerja is a 2016 Indian Hindi-language biographical thriller film directed by Ram Madhvani. Written by Saiwyn Quadras and Sanyuktha Chawla Shaikh, the film stars Sonam Kapoor as the title character, and features Shabana Azmi, Yogendra Tiku and Shekhar Ravjiani in supporting roles. The film was produced by Atul Kasbekar under the banner of Fox Star Studios. The film revolves around the Libya backed Abu Nidal Organization's hijacking of Pan Am Flight 73 in Karachi, Pakistan on 5 September 1986. The film is shown from the point of view of the flight's head purser Neerja Bhanot who thwarted the hijack attempt by alerting the pilots, hence grounding the plane and saved the lives of 359 of the 379 passengers and crew on board.
The film released worldwide on February 19, 2016 to critical acclaim. Made on a budget of ₹20 crore (US$3.0 million), the film earned over ₹135 crore (US$20 million) worldwide.

Plot

The film opens with 22-year-old Neerja Bhanot (Sonam Kapoor) arriving late for a house party. Later that evening her mother (Shabana Azmi) expresses concern once about Neerja's job as a flight attendant and suggests Neerja to return to her old job of modeling. Neerja likes her job and is driven to the airport by her boyfriend Jaideep (Shekhar Ravjiani). Neerja's colleagues love Jaideep, he adores her and gives her an advance birthday present.
Neerja reflects on her brief and unhappy arranged marriage. Her former husband Naresh (Kavi Shastri) was a professional in Doha, Qatar. He constantly harangued and abused Neerja over dowry. (It is revealed that Neerja's family had made it clear there would be no dowry, but the husband had expected otherwise) He also constantly abused Neerja as she could not cook or clean. She eventually returned home to honor a modeling contract. He sent back a humiliating letter attacking her parents about dowry, her lack of domestic skills and suggesting that she had better bring money back or not come back at all. She broke off with him and landed a highly competitive job with Pan Am Airways.
As Neerja boards Pan Am 73 it is revealed that a terrorist group has planned to hijack the plane in Karachi. The plane takes off from Mumbai's Sahar International Airport and lands in Karachi where the four terrorists belonging to Abu Nidal's organization board the plane disguised as security officers escorting a Libyan diplomat. They reveal themselves and hijack the plane. Neerja quickly alerts the cockpit and the three American pilots escape through the overhead hatch and run to the terminal despite firing by the terrorists.
When an Indian American accompanied by his handicapped old mother inadvertently reveals himself to be an American one of the terrorists grabs him and shoots him dead and throws him down the aircraft before the Pakistani negotiators. The terrorists try to locate a radio engineer among the passengers by having Neerja make an announcement over the intercom. Emran Ali (Shashi Bhushan), a Pakistani radio operator gets ready to stand up but Neerja signals him to sit down. Later the terrorists ask the flight attendants to collect the passports so as to locate the Americans and hold them hostage. Neerja and her colleagues collect the passports but skilfully avoid any American passports by kicking them under the seats or down the trash chutes. The terrorists, dejected over not finding any American passports, locate a British citizen and use him for negotiations.
The Pakistan negotiators inadvertently reveal the name of the radio engineer Emran Ali, who is located and roughly brought into the cockpit to start the radio and begin the negotiations. Their main demand is sending the pilots back to the aircraft to fly it to Cyprus and to demand for the release of their imprisoned colleagues languishing in jail. The Pakistani authorities try to stall for time. The terrorist leader chastises the other, younger terrorist who has begun roughing up the passengers and molesting the attendants. Angered by his public embarrassment the younger terrorist storms into the cockpit and shoots the radio engineer and in full defiance of his leader, screams wild threats over the radio. The terrorists are confused; the leader only wants to complete the mission but the younger man is now mad with rage and out of control. Pakistani air control is still negotiating but they are slowly losing control and time and the terrorists are getting agitated by the minute.
Around 17 hours later the plane loses auxiliary power and the lights go out inside. Despite Neerja and the other attendants trying to explain this as a normal airplane reaction, the terrorists believe the power was cut deliberately by the Pakistani armed forces who will soon storm into the plane. In a panic mode, they now begin shooting down passengers indiscriminately . At great peril to her own life, Neerja opens the rear door and deploys the chute and begins directing passengers down the chute. Neerja chooses to let the passengers escape first. In the end, she is shot and fatally injured by the terrorists when she tries to shield young children from the gunfire. The film ends with a tributary message to Neerja who was eventually honoured posthumously with the Ashoka Chakra, India's highest peacetime military decoration awarded for valor, courageous action or self-sacrifice away from the battlefield.

[Review] Movie:White House Down

White House Down is a 2013 American action thriller film directed by Roland Emmerich about an assault on the White House by aparamilitary group and the Capitol Police Officer who tries to stop them. The film's screenplay is by James Vanderbilt, and it starsChanning Tatum and Jamie Foxx, with Maggie GyllenhaalJames WoodsJason ClarkeJoey King, and Richard Jenkins in supporting roles. The film was released on June 28, 2013 and grossed $205 million worldwide.

Plot[edit]

President of the United States James Sawyer (Jamie Foxx) is generating controversy over a proposed peace treaty between the allied nations to remove military forces from the Middle East.
John Cale (Channing Tatum) is a divorced US Capitol Police officer assigned to Speaker of the House Eli Raphelson (Richard Jenkins) after saving his nephew's life during a tour in Afghanistan. His daughter Emily (Joey King), who has a strong enthusiasm for politics, isn't on the greatest of terms with him. He hopes to impress her by getting a job with the Secret Service protecting the President, but Carol Finnerty (Maggie Gyllenhaal), a former college acquaintance of his who believes him to be unqualified due to a lack of follow-through and respect for authority, deems him unworthy. To avoid admitting the truth to Emily, Cale takes her on a tour of the White House.
A man disguised as a janitor detonates a bomb at the center of the US Capitol building. Raphelson and Finnerty are taken to an underground command center in the Pentagon, while Vice President of the United States Alvin Hammond (Michael Murphy) is taken aboard Air Force One. The White House is put on lockdown, separating Cale from Emily, who went to the restroom. Mercenaries led by Emil Stenz (Jason Clarke), who had disguised themselves as video technicians to get inside the White House, start killing off most of the Secret Service and take the tour group hostage, but Cale manages to take a gun and escape to go find his daughter. Retiring Head of the Presidential Detail Martin Walker (James Woods) escorts the President and his detail to the Presidential Emergency Operations Center. Once Sawyer gains access, Walker kills his detail, revealing himself to be the real leader who wants vengeance against Sawyer after a botched black ops mission resulted in the death of Walker's son. Cale, who failed to find Emily, kills a mercenary and takes his gun and radio. Overhearing the radio, Cale locates and rescues Sawyer.
Walker and Stenz bring in Skip Tyler (Jimmi Simpson) to hack into their defense system, but they still require Sawyer to activate the nuclear football. They locate the remaining chain of command and execute the Secretary of Defense before putting them with the hostages. Carl Killick (Kevin Rankin) catches Emily recording a video of the mercenaries and takes her hostage. Cale and Sawyer manage to contact the command structure, who tell Cale to get the President out through underground tunnels. The command structure uses Emily's video to discover the identities of the mercenaries, who used to work for various government agencies. They also discover that Walker has an inoperable tumor, suggesting his involvement is a suicide mission and that he is planning something more dangerous. Cale and Sawyer find the tunnel gate rigged with an explosive and are forced to escape with a presidential limo. After giving chase with Stenz on the White House lawn, Cale and Sawyer get flipped into the White House pool after Cale gets distracted by Killick holding Emily at gunpoint. A gunfight erupts which results in an explosion that leaves Sawyer and Cale presumed dead. Hammond is then sworn in as acting President.
When Cale and Sawyer reveal they are still alive, they learn that Hammond has ordered an aerial incursion to take back the White House, but the mercenaries shoot down the choppers with Javelins. Cale drops his White House passes for himself and Emily while escaping after fighting Stenz. Having already learned of Emily from the video, Stenz, now knowing she is Cale's daughter, takes her to Walker in the Oval Office. Tyler finally finishes the upload into NORAD and launches a missile to shoot down Air Force One, killing Hammond and everyone on board. Raphelson is then sworn in as acting President and reluctantly orders an air strike on the White House, of which Cale is informed.
Walker tells Cale over the White House intercom to surrender Sawyer or Stenz will kill Emily. Sawyer ultimately surrenders himself to save Emily, and Walker reveals his true plan: to use the football to launch the nuclear missiles against the various cities in Iran, which will result in retaliation by many countries and the start of World War III. Sawyer refuses to activate the football, but when Walker threatens to kill Emily again, the alarms and sprinklers are set off by Cale setting various rooms on fire. Tyler is killed while trying to escape by the bomb on the tunnel gate having been tampered with. After killing most of the remaining mercenaries and freeing the hostages, Cale is confronted by Stenz, and blows him up with a grenade belt. Sawyer attacks a distracted Walker, who ultimately gains the upper hand and uses him to activate the football before apparently shooting him dead. Using updated launch codes received by an anonymous source, Walker begins targeting various cities in Iran, but before he initiates the launch, Cale crashes into the office and kills him with a minigun. Emily waves a presidential flag on the front lawn, which calls off the fighter strike. The news media declare Emily a hero and Sawyer is revealed to be alive as the bullet had hit a pocket watch handed down to him from Abraham Lincoln. Finnerty calls Cale to reveal that Walker didn't call in the mercenaries, and that there is another mastermind behind the attack.

When Finnerty arrives at the White House with Raphelson, Cale tells them Sawyer was killed. Raphelson then orders troops to be sent back into the Middle East, which would go against Sawyer's peace treaty. Cale presses Raphelson about conspiring with Walker to orchestrate the attack and proves it by having Finnerty dial his pager number. Sawyer arrives and has Raphelson arrested. Sawyer names Cale as his new bodyguard, and takes him and Emily on a personalized aerial tour of DC.

[Review] Movie:Don 2

Don 2 (also known as Don 2: The King is Back) is a 2011 Indian action thriller film and the second installment of the Don franchise, directed and co-written (with Ameet Mehta and Amrish Shah) by Farhan Akhtar. The film was produced by Ritesh Sidhwani, Shah Rukh Khan and Farhan Akhtar, and is a sequel to 2006's Don. It stars Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Lara Dutta, Om Puri,Boman Irani and Kunal Kapoor, with Hrithik Roshan in a cameo appearance. The film's plot picks up at the end of Don, beginning in Malaysia and moving to Europe. Don, now king of the Asian underworld, plans to take over the European drug cartel. Don 2 marked Akhtar's return to directing after nearly five years. It was filmed in India, Thailand, Germany, Malaysia and Switzerland.
Before its release, Don 2 faced copyright concerns. It was released on 25 December 2011 by Reliance Entertainment in 2D and 3Dformats, which included dubbed versions in Tamil and Telugu. The film had a positive-to-mixed critical reception in India and a generally positive reception overseas. It has been praised for its action, direction and cinematography (exemplified by Shah Rukh Khan's performance), although its pace and music were criticised. Don 2 was shown at the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival. The film received a number of awards, including two Filmfare Awards: Best Sound Design and Best Action. Don 2 ended up with a final gross collections of ₹2.1 billion (US$31 million) including all versions in 100 Days worldwide.

Plot

The film opens five years after the ending of the first film, with Don (Shah Rukh Khan) narrating the story. The European drug cartel bosses meet in the French Riviera to discuss a new threat emerging from Asia: Don is jeopardising their business by undercutting their prices, and the bosses decree that Don must die. Living in Thailand for the last five years, he goes to a remote settlement to pick up a shipment of cocaine. Instead of the expected uneventful transaction, Don fights his way out. He returns to Malaysia, surrendering to Roma (Priyanka Chopra) and Inspector Malik (Om Puri). Don is sentenced to death and sent to prison, where he meets old rival Vardhaan (Boman Irani). He offers Vardhan a partnership, and they escape from prison after poisoning the other inmates.
In Zurich Don meets trusted companion Ayesha (Lara Dutta), and they retrieve the contents of a locker accessible only by Vardhaan. In it is a tape of J.K. Diwan (Alyy Khan), vice-president of the Euro-printing DZB (Deutsche Zentral Bank), who was sent by Fabian Kohl to bribe Singhania (Rajesh Khattar) to kill a competitor. Don blackmails Diwan into giving him the bank's blueprints so he can steal the printing plates. Diwan misleads him and hires Jabbar (Nawab Shah), an assassin. Don escapes, however, and baits Jabbar to working for him. With no other choice, Diwan gives Don the blueprints.
Don and his team plan and execute a bank robbery, taking hostages. After stealing the printing plates he is betrayed by Vardhaan and Jabbar, but escapes. However, Sameer (a team member, played by Kunal Kapoor) calls the police and Don is arrested; he threatens Sameer for informing on him. Unable to enter the bank and free the hostages, the police are forced to work with Don in exchange for giving him German immunity.
Don and Roma reach Vardhaan and Jabbar, but Roma is shot when she refuses to kill him. She still has feelings for Don, although he killed her brother five years earlier. He defeats Vardhaan and his thugs, and Jabbar is killed. Don obtains his immunity papers, surrendering the plates and a disc with information about his team. He brings Roma to a waiting ambulance, and they exchange glances before the doors close. Don later detonates a bomb planted earlier in Diwan's car.
In a final scene Don still has one of the currency plates, which the police think was destroyed by the explosion. Sameer was actually loyal to Don; informing the police was part of the plan. The disc Don gave them actually contains the names of the European drug cartel; when they are arrested, Don becomes king of the European underworld and tells Ayesha and Sameer they have no idea how rich they will become. When Ayesha tells him she was afraid he would be caught, he says: "Don ko pakadna mushkil hi nahin, namumkin hai" ("It is not just hard to catch Don, it is impossible.") and the film ends with the song "Dushman Mera"

[Review] Movie:Don (2006)

Don (also known as Don: The Chase Begins Again) is a 2006 Indian crime-action film directed by Farhan Akhtar, and produced by Ritesh Sidhwani under Excel Entertainment. The film stars Shah Rukh Khan in a double role, opposite Priyanka Chopra, while Arjun Rampal, Boman Irani, Isha Koppikar and Om Puri appear in supporting roles. It is a remake of the 1978 film of the same name, and follows a simple man from the city of Mumbai (formerly Bombay) in western India who is secretly recruited by a police officer to masquerade as "Don," the ruthless leader of an international chain of drug smugglers.
The film hit theaters worldwide on 20 October 2006, and screened at the Berlin Film Festival. Upon release, the film received a mixed critical response, but it grossed over 105 crores worldwide. It spawned a sequel in 2011, Don 2, with Akhtar, Khan, Chopra, Irani and Puri reprising their roles.

Plot

In mid-2000s, the illegal drug trade based in Kuala Lumpur is booming. The Malaysian authorities are called upon for assistance by their Indian counterparts. The Indian team sent to Kuala Lumpur is headed by Deputy Commissioner of Police D'Silva (Boman Irani), who targets the illegal drug operations of Singhania (Rajesh Khattar). Helping him along the way is Inspector Vishal Malik (Om Puri), an Indian officer from Interpol. Both of them know that in order to put an end to the illegal drug trade, they must capture "Don" (Shah Rukh Khan) who manages Singhania's business in Kuala Lumpur. Singhania was one of the two closest and most trusted men of Boris, a criminal who went underground and was presumed dead by the police. Boris's other lieutenant was a man called Vardhan, equally ruthless as Singhania, but his whereabouts are unknown. The police thinks that Singhania had killed Vardhan upon learning that Boris was about to hand over his drug business to Vardhan.
Singhania's subordinate, Don, is known for murdering one of his close associates, Ramesh (Diwakar Pundir), who had attempted to leave the cartel. Ramesh's future wife Kamini (Kareena Kapoor) decides to help the police arrest Don but in the process she is also killed. Now, Ramesh's sister Roma (Priyanka Chopra) plans to avenge her brother and his fiancé. She manages to infiltrate Don's gang.
Don and his inner circle, which consists of Anita (Isha Koppikar) and Narang (Pawan Malhotra), travel to India for a cocaine transaction. An Indian police team led by D'Silva follow them there and capture Don, who is fatally injured while trying to flee from the police. D'Silva keeps this a secret from the department and media as he decides to track down an exact look-alike of Don named Vijay (also Shah Rukh Khan) from Mumbai, asking Vijay to pose as Don so the police can get to Singhania. Vijay agrees when D'Silva promises to admit Deepu (Tanay Chheda), a kid Vijay looks after, to a school in Kuala Lumpur.
Meanwhile, Jasjit (Arjun Rampal), Deepu's father, has just been released from prison. Jasjit is hellbent on killing DCP D'Silva. Jasjit's vendetta against D'Silva began many years ago, when Jasjit, committing a crime in order to save his family from a gang of criminals, was arrested on the orders of D'Silva, thereby preventing Jasjit from saving his wife from death. Jasjit does not know what happened to his son after Jasjit went to prison.
Vijay is admitted to the same hospital as Don by D'Silva. Vijay soon gets all the scars and marks which Don has on his body. Suddenly, Don dies of heart failure and the masquerade becomes inevitable. When Vijay (as Don) re-enters the gang in Kuala Lumpur, he claims to have lost his memory, and the more he learns about Don, the more he claims to remember. Don has a disc containing some of the cartel's vital information about deals and contacts. As part of the plan, Vijay agrees to find and bring this disc to D'Silva. When Vijay finds the disc, Roma (who is now a close associate of Don) decides to accompany him. When they arrive, Roma attempts to kill Vijay (assuming he is Don). However, DCP D'Silva intervenes and tells Roma about his secret plan to reach to Singhania. Roma decides to help the police to capture Singhania and joins the two in their plan. Vijay hands over the disc to DCP D'Silva.
Singhania comes to Kuala Lumpur for a meeting with his clients. There DCP D'Silva murders him by adding poison to his drinks. Suddenly, the Malaysian police and Interpol arrive at the hotel. Vijay and the core gang members are all arrested by Interpol. D'Silva is apparently killed in shoot-out. This is unfortunate for Vijay because D'Silva was the only person who could prove that Vijay is not the real Don. Now Don's inner circle turns against Vijay, having discovered his true identity. Vijay escapes from police custody and tries to recover the disc he gave to D'Silva in order to prove his innocence.
Jasjit secretly enters DCP D'Silva's apartment in Kuala Lumpur and waits for D'Silva with a gun, not knowing of his death. There Jasjit finds the disc Vijay gave to the DCP and is shocked by its contents. He soon receives a phone-call saying that if he wants to see his son again, he will have to bring the disc to the men who have Deepu, his son, hostage. At this meeting, it is revealed that D'Silva was alive all along and is actually Vardhan, Boris' other lieutenant. In other words, Vardhan, posing as D'Silva, used Vijay to get closer to Singhania and eliminate his competitor. Jasjit somehow manages to escape with his son from the smugglers.
Jasjit meets Vijay [now at large] and Roma and reveals that D'Silva is really Vardhan. With this knowledge the three hatch a plot to help Interpol arrest Vardhan. The next day, Jasjit arranges a meeting with Vardhan in Langkawi, saying he will hand over the disc. The trio inform the Malaysian police and Interpol of the meeting and get Vardhan arrested. Vijay is badly injured in a final hand-to-hand combat with Vardhan, and is rushed to hospital. Before he leaves, Roma confesses her love for him. In a final twist, it is revealed that Don was alive all this time, and was pretending to be Vijay the whole time. While in the hospital, Don recovered quickly from his injuries, overhearing DCP D'Silva's conversation with Vijay. After Vijay's operation, Don got up from the room while D'Silva and Ashok were absent and went to the room where Vijay lay. He switched places with Vijay, taking Vijay off life support and causing him to die of heart failure. It is also revealed that the disc Don gave to the police was fake. Now with both Vardhan and Singhania removed from his path, Don becomes the master of entire Asian drug dealing ring.
